Lacrosse Connections - Dave's Midwestern Ohio Memories

Series of Guest Blogs by an out-of-state Fish Report reader originally from this area about fond memories of growing up in Midwestern Ohio during the 50’s & 60’s

Lacrosse Connections

Last weekend, my wife and I were talking with our son via phone and he mentioned a Facebook post from the lacrosse coach whom our son had previously worked for as JV lacrosse coach at the local high school where he now lives. The coach indicated he had access to the high school’s gym and wanted to invite his Facebook friends to play basketball that Saturday morning. Our son signed up, really enjoyed the play and especially reconnecting with his old lacrosse coach and other mutual friends. As a result, the group is now planning to play every weekend throughout the winter. After our son expressed his excitement playing basketball with his old coach, the word “connections” came to mind.

Elaborating, I pointed out that thanks to his lacrosse connections, this basketball playing opportunity arose. Explaining further, he was also reminded of the time a fire broke out in the apartment below his unit causing an evacuation of the entire apartment building due to smoke damage.

The lacrosse head coach had seen the fire on the news and knowing our son lived there, drove by the fire scene and noticed him outside watching the fire being extinguished by the firefighters. The coach and his wife took him to stay at their home for as long as needed until he found a new residence. That led our son to search for a place to buy and using his savings plus earnings from lacrosse coaching, was able to purchase a condo that he still enjoys to this day.

Our son's lacrosse coaching role would not have been possible had he not attended the University of Michigan, played on the lacrosse team there, and been given a positive reference by his college coach.

And while in high school, playing lacrosse prepared him well for his Michigan experience. Furthermore, as a high school junior in 1996, our son was cut from the varsity baseball team and was really devastated since he really loved baseball (like me, but he also couldn't hit a curveball!). However, the athletic director at his high school decided to form a lacrosse team and asked our son to join play, which he did, diligently learning and excelling at the game of lacrosse, amazingly leading the team to win a state championship in his senior year.

Thinking back on the connections and subsequent implications was a wonderful revelation to all of us on that phone call.

Young Fish Report readers out there, the path you chose today can have a profound impact on the rest of your life. It sure has worked out that way for our son, in a notable way.

Postscript: During my son’s second time playing basketball with his former lacrosse coach, he unfortunately tore his achilles tendon, and is scheduled for out-patient surgery today. We’ll have to see what future connections result from his untimely incident.
