It's been a banner week for Russia senior Hayden Quinter (picture by Russia School) |
If you follow the Russia boys basketball team, but can't attend their games this Friday and Saturday, Fish Report will be streaming our audio broadcast of both varsity contests. The Raiders improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Shelby County Athletic League after a huge road win on Tuesday at unbeaten Botkins. The Trojans gave Russia their biggest battle so far this season as the Raiders escaped with a five point win 62-57. After opening their schedule on December 1 with an eight point win versus Jackson Center, Russia's average margin of victory over the next seven games leading up to Botkins was 31.4 points per game. Through all nine games, head coach Spencer Cordonnier's team is averaging 68.2 points per game and giving up only 42.3. It's also been a particularly good week for Raiders senior Hayden Quinter, who scored career point 1,000 on Tuesday just four days after being named Piqua Holiday Classic MVP last Friday.

Next up for Russia is a date at Ft. Loramie this Friday. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Russia, but was changed due to some February plumbing plans at the home of the Redskins. The two rivals will meet again on February 16 in their league finale at Russia. Ft. Loramie comes into Friday's contest with a record of 2-6 (1-3 SCAL). The Redskins have a completely different roster from last year's team that finished 18-7 and graduated nine seniors with no returning letterman this year. Leading the team through eight games has been the combination of senior Alex Boerger and junior Max Maurer. Maurer is averaging 9.0 points per game and Boerger 7.6. Fish Report will be on the call for the third consecutive year with the trio of Craig Fiessinger, Ken Francis, and Ft. Loramie's most recent
Wall of Honor inductee, Dave Ross.
On Saturday, Russia hits the halfway mark of their regular season schedule returning to the Clair C Naveau Gymnasium at home to host New Bremen (3-5). The Cardinals will be fresh off a Friday night Midwest Athletic Conference battle versus Delphos St. Johns (7-1). It will be quite a weekend for New Bremen head coach Cory Stephens' squad, as Delphos is ranked #14 in the latest
MaxPreps Ohio D-IV poll and Russia is #4. Leading the Cardinals in scoring through eight games is seniors Aaron Thieman averaging 13.8 points per game and Jackson Lennartz at 10.4. Fans attending the game might also note the Russia Athletic Boosters will be conducting their annual Ball Drop fundraiser at the conclusion of the game. Tickets can still be purchased from booster members, Raider athletes, or at the game. Streaming the play-by-play action for Fish Report will be Craig Fiessinger and Ross Fiessinger with stats provided by Stacey Fiessinger.
